Does PPF protect against stone chips?

PPF provides shielding against stone chips and abrasion. The polyurethane film is 3-4x thicker than the clear coat layer of paint, so helps to absorb the impact and protect the finish underneath. It is the best option available in the car care industry for protection against stone chips and scratches.

FAQs About Paint Protection Film

Below you’ll find the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about paint protection film. Get in touch with us today if you need any more information about our PPF installation services.

How long does PPF last?

Paint protection film can last upwards of 10-years on average, but this does depend on several factors including:

  • Which manufacturer’s PPF is applied – some films last much longer than others.
  • How well the PPF was installed – poor surface preparation and installation technique will dramatically reduce the longevity.
  • How the PPF is maintained – using the wrong chemicals and techniques can damage the film and reduce the lifespan.

Here at PAC Detailing & PPF in Southport, we are trained installers of Pyramid Car Care PPF which offers a warranty against yellowing, cracking, and blistering defects which are not caused by accidents, scratches or accidental damage.

Traditional PPF is a transparent film, so will not change the look of the vehicle and it will still look glossy and have incredible depth of colour. There are however some PPF options available which are designed to change the look of the car such as satin PPF and colour-changing PPF.

PPF and ceramic coatings are the two best options for protecting the paintwork, however they have their own pros and cons. Both help to make the car easier to wash and keep it cleaner between washes. Ceramic coatings offer very limited abrasion resistance, but are much cheaper to install. PPF is the pinnacle of paint protection, but that does come at an increased price and longer install time. Please read our blog post comparing PPF and ceramic coatings for more information.

Ceramic coatings can be applied over PPF, but it is important to choose the correct coating as it is not possible with them all. The coating needs to be flexible enough to be compatible with the PPF. Ceramic coating PPF can improve the hydrophobicity and chemical resistance.

PPF is significantly more durable than vinyl wrap. PPF is designed to protect the paintwork, whereas vinyl wrap is designed to change the look of the vehicle. PPF typically lasts 10+ years, whereas vinyl wraps last between 3-5 years on average.

PPF is for anyone who wants to preserve the condition of their vehicle. Although incredibly popular with supercar and high-end vehicle owners, it is certainly not exclusive to them, and PPF can be applied to a wide variety of vehicles.

The correct installation process is vital in order to ensure the PPF lasts for its capable lifespan. This all starts with a thoroughly prepared surface. Here’s how a car is prepared for PPF installation:

  • The vehicle is cleaned using safe-wash techniques to prevent clear coat defects.
  • A thorough decontamination process is performed including tar removal, iron fallout removal, and clay bar treatment to leave the paintwork feeling ultra-smooth.
  • The paint is prepared by degreasing the surface to ensure it is free from oils or residues which could prevent the proper adhesion of the film.

Once, the surface has been prepared, the PPF installation process can begin:

  • The make and model of the vehicle is matched to a database and the PPF sections are then printed and cut if required.
  • The film is then peeled, treated and placed down on the panel.
  • The film is pressed down and air bubbles are removed using a squeegee.
  • Any excess film is cut and the surface is wiped down to remove the excess liquid.
  • The film is then allowed to cure indoors overnight.

The process of PPF installation typically takes 2-3 days for front-end coverage, and up to 6-days for full car PPF installation.

It is vital that all the installation stages are performed in an indoor environment which is temperature and humidity controlled, and also free from dust. Applying PPF in sub-optimal conditions can result in poor durability, and visual issues such as peeling edges and cloudy patches.

Ensuring that the PPF is properly washed and maintained is key to making it last. Fortunately, PPF makes washing the car much easier, there are just a few things to keep in mind to keep it in good condition:

• Do not wash the car or expose to chemicals for at least 7 days after application.
• Always use safe wash techniques e.g. pre-washing, using the two bucket method, and using good-quality microfibre wash mitts and towels.
• Do not use aggressive or caustic chemicals to wash the car e.g. traffic film removers.
• Avoid using a pressure washer directly on the edges of the PPF.
• Avoid using tar removers and other solvents near the film’s edges.
• Only use protective products which are compatible with PPF.
• Do not use clay bars or synthetic clay mitts on PPF.
• Do not use roadside car wash stations or automatic (tunnel) car washes as these will damage the film.

If the PPF needs to removed, it should only be done so by a trained professional to avoid damaging the paint underneath. It involves gently heating and peeling the film away from the surface. After which, a new layer can be applied or the car can be protected with a ceramic coating or left bare.
