What is a ceramic coating?

Ceramic coatings are liquid polymers which when applied to a surface, cure to form a hard layer of protection with a hydrophobic and slick finish. This helps to keep the car cleaner between washes, as dirt is unable to stick to the paintwork as easily compared to uncoated paint. Ceramic coatings can offer up to 7-years of protection when professionally installed and maintained. They are typically applied to the paintwork, but can also be applied to glass, alloys and plastic trim.

What is the difference between ceramic coatings and PPF?

Ceramic coatings offer excellent chemical resistance and gloss, but do not provide abrasion and impact resistance like paint protection film (PPF) does. PPF can last upwards of 10-years, and protects against stone chips and scratches to keep the paintwork unblemished. Please visit our PPF service page for more information.

How long do ceramic coatings last?

Ceramic coatings typically last for 3-7 years. The precise longevity depends on:

  • Which coating is applied – some coatings are more durable than others.
  • How the coating is applied – the surface must be thoroughly prepared before application to ensure the coating can bond to the surface.
  • How the vehicle is maintained – regular washing and chemical decontamination will keep the coating in good condition.

Ceramic coatings offer far superior protection compared to waxes in a number of ways:

  • Ceramic coatings offer up to 7 years of protection whereas waxes typically only last for a few months.
  • A ceramic coated surface is harder and more chemically resistant compared to a waxed surface.
  • Ceramic coatings offer much better protection against UV and chemicals.
  • Vehicles protected with a ceramic coating are easier to wash and stay cleaner between washes, as the surface is slicker and more hydrophobic.

The downsides of ceramic coatings, is that they are more time-consuming and difficult to use compared to car waxes. The surface must also be more thoroughly prepared so that the coating can bond properly. That’s why ceramic coatings are typically applied by professional detailers with training and experience, and waxes are often used by enthusiasts working on a driveway.

Ceramic coatings are not just for high-end vehicles, and can be applied to all types of cars including daily drivers and family vehicles. Ceramic coatings are ideal for anyone who wants a vehicle which is easier to maintain and stays looking glossy.

Ceramic coatings come in a liquid format in a small glass bottle (usually around 30-50ml). Here are the basic steps involved in the coating application process:

  • The car is thoroughly washed, decontaminated and degreased. Machine polishing may also be performed if required.
  • The coating liquid is drizzled onto an applicator pad. This applicator pad is then used to spread the coating across the surface in a uniform layer.
  • The coating is then allowed to bond (this usually takes 15-60 seconds).
  • A microfibre towel is used to remove the remaining coating residue.
  • The coating is then allowed to cure (harden).

The coating application process should be performed in an indoor environment. This ensures that the ambient temperature and humidity is in the correct range for the coating to bond, and that the surface is free from dust and other airborne contaminants.

Ceramic coated cars easier to wash and maintain because dirt does not stick as easily to the surface. However, it’s important to wash the car regularly (ideally every 2-weeks) using “safe” wash techniques to prevent marring and swirl marks. Here’s a basic outline of the wash process:

  • The paint should be pre-washed using snow foam and thoroughly pressure-washed to remove traffic film build-up before the contact wash.
  • A “two bucket” wash method should be used to reduce dirt build-up on the wash mitt.
  • High-quality car shampoo should be used which is free from any waxes and gloss-enhancing agents.
  • Good-quality microfibre wash mitts should be used instead of abrasive tools such as sponges and brushes.
  • After washing and rinsing, the car should be dried using a soft, plush microfibre towel to prevent water spots.

Ceramic coated cars should never be taken through automatic tunnel washes, or roadside car washing stations as this will cause marring and swirl marks.

Ceramic coatings are not scratch-proof. Although coated paint is harder than conventional clear coat on most modern vehicles, this offers very limited protection against abrasion and impact besides some light wash marring resistance. If you are looking for scratch and stone chip protection, please visit our paint protection film service page.

New cars absolutely do benefit from ceramic coatings. The coating will help make the vehicle easier to maintain, and help retain the “newness” by protecting the finish. Please visit our new car detailing service page for more information on the options available and the benefits.

Ceramic coatings can be applied to a variety of surfaces including:

  • Paint
  • Alloys
  • Glass
  • Exterior plastic trim
  • Metal
  • Interior leather and plastics

We offer the choice of two different ceramic coatings:

  • Gtechniq Crystal Serum Light – offers 3-5 years of protection.
  • Performance PPL Reign – offers 7-years of protection.

Both ceramic coatings offer excellent gloss, hydrophobicity, and chemical resistance. We can advise on the best option based on your vehicle and requirements.
