Which is best for new cars: PPF or Ceramic Coating?
Ceramic coatings make the vehicle easier to clean, offer incredible gloss, and impressive chemical resistance. However, coatings do not offer scratch and stone chip resistance like PPF does. PPF is the ultimate choice if you want to preserve the current condition of your vehicle’s paintwork, and can be topped with a ceramic coating to boost the water and dirt repellent characteristics. Please visit our blog post comparing ceramic coatings and PPF for more information.
FAQs About New Car Detailing Services
Below you’ll find the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about new car detailing services, including PPF and ceramic coatings. Get in touch with us today if you need any more information about our services.
What is a ceramic coating?
Ceramic coatings are liquid polymers which when applied to a surface, cure to form a hard layer of protection with a hydrophobic and slick finish. This helps to keep the car cleaner between washes, as dirt is unable to stick to the paintwork as easily compared to uncoated paint. Ceramic coatings can offer up to 7-years of protection when professionally installed and maintained. They are typically applied to the paintwork, but can also be applied to glass, alloys and plastic trim.
- The paint is washed, decontaminated, machine polished and degreased to prepare the surface for coating installation.
- The coating liquid is drizzled onto an applicator pad.
- This applicator pad is then used to spread the coating across the surface in a uniform layer.
- The coating is then allowed to bond (this usually takes 15-60 seconds).
- A microfibre towel is used to remove the remaining coating residue.
- The coating is then allowed to cure (harden).
What is PPF?
Paint protection film (PPF) is made from a transparent, polyurethane film which typically measures between 200-250 microns thick. For reference, ceramic coatings usually add between 1-3 microns of protection, and the clear coat layer of paint on an average vehicle is 30-50 microns thick. Due to its thickness and strength, it offers excellent protection against stone chips and scratches.
Before PPF is applied, the surface must be thoroughly washed, decontaminated, and degreased. Once the surface is prepared, the PPF installation steps are as follows:
- The make and model of the vehicle is matched to a database and the PPF sections are then printed and cut if required.
- The film is then peeled, treated and placed down on the panel.
- The film is pressed down and air bubbles are removed using a squeegee.
- Any excess film is cut and the surface is wiped to remove any excess liquid.
Do new cars need machine polishing?
New cars almost always need machine polishing before applying a ceramic coating, as they have clear coat defects which are typically inflicted either at the factory, or when the vehicle is prepared for collection at the dealership. Common defects include:
- Swirl marks and clear coat sctatches – caused by poor wash technique.
- Sanding marks – these usually are created at the factory after painting.
- Holograms – caused by poor machine polishing technique usually at the factory or sometimes at the dealership.
- Chemical etching – caused by bird droppings sitting for too long on the unprotected finish during the vehicle’s journey from the factory to the dealership.
What does a new car detailing service include?
Our new car detailing services always include a thorough wash (using safe wash techniques to prevent swirl marks), chemical decontamination, and clay bar treatment. You have the option to have your vehicle enhanced and protected with our ceramic coating package, or have either partial or full PPF installation to provide impact and abrasion resistance. We can advise on the best option for your new car based on your budget and requirements.
What's the difference between new car protection services carried out by professional detailers and dealerships?
Car dealerships are experts in vehicle sales, but they’re not specialists in car detailing techniques such as safe washing, machine polishing and ceramic coating/ PPF installation. As trained detailers, we have the experience and knowledge required to deliver the best possible finish, so that your vehicle actually looks brand-new, and is protected using the very best that the industry has to offer.
Should I choose PPF or a ceramic coating?
This really depends on your budget and requirements. PPF is the only option which offers stone chip and scratch resistance. Ceramic coatings are a lower-cost option which focus on making the vehicle easier to maintain and more chemically resistant. Here is a comparison table showing the differences between PPF and ceramic coatings. For the best of both worlds, you can also have the PPF topped with a ceramic coating to make the vehicle easier to wash and maintain.
Ceramic Coating | Paint Protection Film |
Typically last for 3-7 years | Can last upwards of 10-years |
No stone chip or scratch protection | Provide stone chip and scratch resistance |
Take 1-2 days to install | Take 2-5 days to install |
No self-healing properties | Has self-healing properties |
Installation costs upwards £450 on average | Costs upwards of £1300-£3500 |
Which ceramic coatings and PPF do you use?
We use Pyramid Car Care PPF which offers incredible clarity and self-healing characteristics, making it a market-leading option designed to shield your vehicle against stone chips and scratches. We install premium ceramic coatings from Gtechniq and Performance PPL, offering up to 7-years of durability, incredible chemical resistance, impressive hydrophobicity and extreme gloss.
